TIPS & INFO

*Thai Baht is their currency.  $100 USD = 3502 Baht, and $100 CAD = 2619 Baht.  Let’s use a familiar example.  A Big Mac combo at McDonalds in Bangkok is 215 Baht = $6.14 USD.  A 1 hour foot massage is around 400 Baht = $11.42 USD.  The cheapest things are local street food, and transportation in Bangkok (BTS Sky Train – $0.50 USD, Grab from airport into the city $12 USD, Taxi’s around the same as a Grab).

*I have T-Mobile and it works fine in Bangkok, but data is very slow.

*Make sure you have a universal adaptor for your electronics.  For cell phones everything should be easy, but for anything else be prepared.

Screen Shot 2020-01-16 at 8.05.01 PM.png

*Grab App.  It’s the equivalent to Uber, Uber Eats & Lyft.  Actually, I think Uber owns it.  Download it, and have it ready before you land to Bangkok.  It’s the first thing you will use to get to the Airbnb from the airport. You can order food on it as well.

Screen Shot 2020-01-16 at 8.09.31 PM.png

*The weather will be hot as hell.  94/F=34/C everyday, and it stays warm at night too.  So stay hydrated.

*Time Zone – Bangkok is  15 hours ahead of Los Angeles.  So if it’s 12:00PM (PDT) in Los Angeles, it will be 3:00AM (GMT) in Bangkok.    Minus another 3 hours on top of that for our people in Toronto, and Atlanta.  12:00PM (EST) in Atlanta/Toronto, is 12:00AM (GMT) in Bangkok.  (12 Hours ahead).

  • Population of Bangkok is 10.9 million, Phuket is 449,000, and the population of Thailand is 71.801 million people.

  • Temple etiquette in Thailand has rules.  Turn off phone, don’t point, don’t smoke, don’t chew gum, don’t photograph monks, don’t touch Buddha, remove shoes, remove hats, greet monks with a wai, and dress modestly (Shorts, sleeveless tops, flip flops, and sandals without back straps aren’t allowed.  The most common offense committed inside of temples is to pose for a photo, or a selfie with back turned to a Buddha image.  The temple is a holy, and spiritual place, so act like if you were going to church on a Sunday.  I don’t see anyone taking a selfie with Jesus on the cross in the background.
  • The Buddha is sacred in Thailand, so if you have any tattoos, or jewelry, or anything that has a Buddha on it…well hide it.
  • Women may never touch a monk, or his robes.

INTRO
Finally, we can travel back to Asia again!! :). I know that we’ve been waiting for this, and I thought it would be dope to go back to the mother land. March 9, 2023 – March 19, 2023 I’ll be celebrating in Osaka, and Tokyo Japan. (Osaka March 9 – 12 & Tokyo March 12 – 19). Everyone will have to leave on March 8th, to get to Osaka on the 9th in the evening. The actual Birthday is on March 28, but I wanted to adjust the dates so that certain people can come this time! From Super Nintendo World, to the clubs and all the food spots, I’ll make sure your that your IG posts will be lit, and make everyone at home be jelly jelly jelly. So excited and grateful y’all 🙂

WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE
With that being said, whether it’s your first time, or not, Japan is known for its highly structured society, governed by an unspoken set of strict etiquette rules. My people’s are known to be the most respectful, and courteous people in the world. Our culture is centered on respect of privacy, and respect of hierarchy in the family. It may be a culture shock to most, but for the Japanese, the quality of conduct in public is seen as highly reputable, and is held in high regard. We don’t expect foreigners, to know all the rules, but here are some tips.

  1. Smoking/Vaping – There’s designated areas where you can smoke outside. If you can’t find one, just smoke in an alley somewhere. DO NOT walk and smoke on the streets, DO NOT just walk outside the hotel, and smoke in public, DO NOT throw your butts on the street. It’s considered very bad manners.
  2. Trash – Speaking of cigarette butts/garbage, you might find yourself wandering through Tokyo, or any other big city, looking for a trash bin. For various reasons, they are sometimes scarce. One of them being, take your garbage home since it’s yours. Their garbage day system at home is very organized too. Literally every day is garbage day, and depending what city you are in, it kinda goes something like this. Day 1 – plastic only, day 2 – paper only, day 3 – raw garbage only, day 4 – cardboard box etc. Hence why the country is so clean everywhere you go.
  3. Tipping – NO tipping in Japan. The end.
  4. Escalators – People stand on the left in Kanto; the East side of Japan including Tokyo, as well as most other regions. On the other hand, people stand on the right side in Kansai; the West side of Japan, especially Osaka. You will see how organized it is when you get to a escalator, and the stairs in Japan.

Other than these, bow to say hi, and bye (shaking hands still good), slurp your soups, and noodles to show appreciation for the dish, take your shoes off inside, don’t pour your own drinks, don’t walk and eat, don’t be so damn loud unless we are at the club or at a izakaya (people on the train speak quietly to each other, and rarely speak on the phone too), respect your elders (even if they are a year older), don’t jaywalk, taxi doors open and close automatically so have patience, and don’t point at people with your chopsticks. Congrats, you are Japanese now.

COVID 19 / TRAVEL
Visitors are expected to be fully vaccinated with one booster shot or have a negative COVID PCR test result taken within 72 hours of departure. To expedite your arrival to Japan, be sure to have your physical vaccination certificate on hand. There is an online Fast Track system established by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). Download the MySOS app and upload the required documents; your screen will turn blue or green when all information has been submitted, and you’ll receive a QR code to show to authorities at customs and immigration.

In Japan, where consideration for others is a big part of their culture, masks are worn to protect oneself, but also as a courtesy, and sign of respect for those around you. The Japanese government continues to strongly recommend masking, and use is expected, especially indoors when parties are speaking, but masks are not technically required in hotels and restaurants. Masks are also not required outdoors, but encouraged if you aren’t able to maintain social distancing.

As of May 2020, travelers riding the shinkansenor bullet trains—need to reserve a special seat if they have “oversized” baggage: anything between 160 and 250 cm (63 and 98 inches, essentially any bag larger than a carry-on suitcase).

MONIES
1 USD = 147.07 JPY (January 16, 2024)
1 CAD = 109.13 JPY (January 16, 2024)
Pretty much what this means is that the USD is still stronger than the Japanese YEN, so things will be cheaper for us! Simply put, $100 USD will give us around $147.07 worth of Yen. Fortunately for my Canadians, the YEN is still low. ($100 CAD = $109.13 worth of YEN). A more detailed look at simple conversion is on my 2018 Tokyo Birthday blog.

We will grab personalized Pasmo or Suica cards. These are pre-paid cards for the trains, subways, vending machines, restaurants, and certain stores. You can get these easily at any train station. For anyone staying longer and doing cross country on trains and on the bullet train, look into getting a UNLIMITED JR Pass which is around $450 for 7 days. You can go anywhere on any train unlimited times. One way bullet train ride from Tokyo to Osaka is usually $110-$150, so if you’re hopping around its definitely worth it.

FOOD FOOD FOOD

Michelin Star to the hole in the wall restaurants, the food scene is unreal in Japan. Even McDonald’s and KFC tastes better there. From Japanese curry, shabu shabu, yakitori, teriyaki, sushi, ramen, udon, soba, tempura, fluffy pancakes, wagyu steak, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, pizza, gyoza, etc, just let me know what you’re in the mood for and I’ll guide you or take you there. Remember the food at convenience stores like Lawson/7eleven/Minimart is fire too lol. Anyways, here are some to get you inspired below. BTW if you’re a coffee connoisseur, here’s a great list for that. IG POST VIDEO

TIPS & INFO

*Thai Baht is their currency.  $100 USD = 3044 Baht, and $100 CAD = 2333 Baht.  Let’s use a familiar example.  A Big Mac combo at McDonalds in Bangkok is 215 Baht = $7 USD.  A 1 hour foot massage is around 600 Baht = $20 USD.  The cheapest things are local street food, and transportation (BTS Sky Train – $0.50 USD, Grab from airport into the city $12 USD, Taxi’s around the same as a Grab).  Places we will be going are internationally known so it will cost the same, as if you were at home.

*I have T-Mobile and it works fine in Bangkok, but data is very slow.  It can get frustrating at time when you’re trying to call a car, or trying to creep someone on Instagram.  I think a bunch of us will get a pocket wifi at the airport, and have everyone connect that way.

I suggest everyone to download it, and have it ready before you land to Bangkok.  It’s the first thing you will use to get to the Airbnb from the airport.

FUN FACTS

  • Maha Vajiralongkorn is the King of Thailand
  • Population of Bangkok is 8.281 million, and the population of Thailand is 69.131 million people.
  • The standard Thai greeting is Sawasdee (sounds like “sah-wah-dee”).  Men say hello with say-wah-dee-khrap (short and sharp finish).  Women say hello with say-wah-dee-khaa (drawn out finish)
  • Temple etiquette in Thailand is simple.
  • Phang Nga, was one of the spots that got heavily hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, and tsunami.  5078 people died, and 3716 people went missing in total.
  • Mangosteen is the National Fruit of Thailand.  Exotic tropical fruit that tastes amazing.
  • According to MasterCard, Bangkok is the most traveled to city in the world.

Firstly, I wanna welcome everyone.  I’m so happy, and excited for this upcoming Honolulu Birthday trip, and can’t wait to see everyone.  The trip started 4 years ago, and it’s amazing that the tradition is still continuing strong.  Some new faces and old faces will be returning to the birthday, but the momentum will always stay the same.  Nothing but happy, fun, and positive energy :).

Tips & Info

Hawaii is obviously part of the US, so things will be straight forward here without any culture shock, like in Japan last year.  Please have cash ready in US for several of the events that I have planned so we can move forward smoothly.  No “I forgot”, or “I have a card”, or “venmo you later”, or anything please.  On the schedule, I’ll mark what is needed, but honestly $50 cash at least will be needed for specific events on the entire trip, but the more  you will have the easier it will be to get around for dinners, clubs etc.

TIPS & INFO

***Keep 10000 Yen – 30000 Yen in cash ($100-$300USD).  You will know why when the time comes.  7-11 and most banks will accept your debit card to take out cash, if you need more.  I personally do it before I leave Los Angeles, and or at the airport in Japan, at the Miziho Bank when I land.  Tony likes to do it at 7-11, where the exchange surprisingly one of the best.  The Yen (Japanese Currency) simply works like this.  In North America 100 cents turns into 1 Dollar (obviously).  In Japan, they simply count up in currency just like we do (1 cent = 1 yen, 2 cents = 2 yen, 3 cents = 3 yen etc…), but when it hits 100 Yen (like 100 cents in North America), the Yen doesn’t change to a dollar system like the US, or Canada (100 cents = $1), and simply stays as is at 100 Yen.  So for example, 100 Yen is $1.00, 500 Yen is $5.00 or 500 cents, 10000 Yen is $100.00 or 10000 cents.  When we shop and eat, check the price, and put a decimal point in between the last two digits.  So using the example, 5789 Yen and 32599 yen, put that decimal point dividing the last two digits, and you get 57.89, and 325.99.  This way you can get your quick idea of how much it is in the US or Canada.  Now considering the world currency exchange… Yes, The US Dollar is stronger than the Yen, and Yes, the Canadian Dollar is weaker than the Yen.  Do all this mess after you quickly snap an idea of how much it is.  Right now, $100 USD is 10595 YEN (you win like $6), and $100 CAD is 8091 YEN (you lose like $19.09).  So if you buy a jacket that costs 30000 YEN,  doing the quick conversion which is $300.00, and if you’re American minus the (3x$6=$18) $18, and you get $282 USD.  If you’re Canadian, add the (3×19.09=57.27) $57.27, and you get $357.27 CAD.  That’s the true cost of your jacket.  So just quickly keep all of this in mind, and you can approximate how much you’re spending.  Anyways, I’m not an accountant or a mathematician so, good luck.

***Pocket Wi-Fi is available at both Haneda, and Narita airport right when you come out with your bags.  Depending on the package that you get, it can range from $4.50-$9.00 a day.  International roaming with Verizon is $10 a day in Tokyo.  I have to get the wifi, because I have to send work to my radio station, and verizon is not good for what I need over seas.  Tony can tell you, we tried staying in Tokyo with out a pocket wifi once.  IT WAS A MAJOR STRUGGLE.  I suggest everyone get one if they aren’t using their own data.
Screen Shot 2018-03-08 at 1.21.46 AM.png

***Pasmo Card is used to ride the trains.  It’s equivalent to a metro card etc.  You can actually buy stuff with it too, but everyone will need it unless you want to pay cash every time we ride the train.  It’s gonna speed up the process, especially when we are traveling with 25 people.  Usually fill it up with 2000-4000 Yen ($20-$40).

***Sockets, and plugs in Japan look like this.
plug2.jpgplug.jpg
All phone chargers are good to go (voltage and socket).  Laptop chargers usually have 3 prongs, so will need a converter (voltage is good).  Lastly, make sure your hair dryer and straighteners are compatible with the power voltage in Japan.  The voltage in Japan is 100v, where as in North America it’s 120v.  Sometimes these products aren’t International ready, and will burn out in seconds.
***SOME funny tips on etiquette.
-Escalators, stand on the left and walk on right.  No joke, just watch, or get trampled over, and be hated on.
-Trains, don’t need to be loud and causing a scene, don’t talk on cell phones unless it’s urgent.
-Smoking, I don’t think anyone smokes in my group, but you can’t smoke outside in public either.  There’s designated spots outside.  That goes for Vapes as well.  Walking and smoking is a big no no.

***Garbage bins, rarely exist on the streets and in public.  2 reasons.  1 for safety reasons, where terrorist can hide bombs in them.  (It has happened before long ago, killed many people in Japan, in the subway).  2ndly because the Japanese believe that its your garbage, so take it home and throw it away there.  There’s a heavy law on how garbage is divided in Japan.  The people staying in the AIRBNB, will notice that there is a different trash day in Japan every day lol.  Plastic day, bottle and can day, Cardboard box news paper day, plastic day, raw waste day…so on..haha..The city is clean as fuck though lol.

***Paper towels, don’t exist in public washrooms.  Only electric hand dryers.  I just air dry lol, some carry a handkerchief.  Tony & Google will have more info on public hand dryers :).

***Weather, will be like 16-18 degrees celsius (60-64 degrees fahrenheit) during the day.  Night will be like 10c/50f degrees.  Just be ready.

***Time Zone.  If it’s 12 PM in Los Angeles/Las Vegas (PDT) on March 26, <3PM in Atlanta/Toronto/New Jersey (EDT)>, then Tokyo would be 4AM in Tokyo (GMT+9) on March 27.  There’s no daylight savings in Tokyo, so this will vary on when you go.

***Dress code at Harlem, R Lounge and most clubs are very casual.  Everyone can wear street wear clothing, hats, and runners, like you’re going to a bar, or pub back home.  Tokyo is one of the fashion capitals, so you will see uniquely dressed people.  BUT, over the weekend we will hit 1Oak, and A Life.  Females are in dresses and high heels there, so it’s really up to you.  Otherwise this is a casual laid back trip when it comes to what to wear.

***AIRBNB ADDRESS IS
4 Chome-4-14 Yayoichō, Nakano-ku, Tōkyō-to 164-0013, Japan

***The Japanese version of the address is there for the cab drivers.  90% of them are too old to read in English.

Haneda Airport

When you get out with your luggage, the pocket wifi spot will be near by.  After you get that (you’re not forced to), there should be signs directing you to the train station which is connected to the airport.  Anytime you feel lost, just stop and ask someone at any counter and they will direct you there.  Once you get to the ticket machine counter, there are people that are assisting on how to get a ticket for the train.  You will notice a intricate train map of the city with prices above the machines.  Don’t worry about it for now, since you’ll have the Pasmo card, you’ll by pass all of that.  Now, this is where your cash becomes handy.  I think all trains only take cash.  Look for the Pasmo aisle, and or just ask the ticket lady for help.  Apply for the new card, and fill it with money.  5000 yen ($50) maybe, you’re gonna need it all week anyways.  Once you get that, you have to take the Keikyu-Kuko Line to Shinagawa Station.  If you can’t find it, ask the ticket person which way you need to go.  The key destination is Shinagawa Station, they will know since that’s where most people are trying to get to, from the airport anyways.  Once you get off Shinagawa Station, look for the Yamanote Line. This is the most popular line of Tokyo which circles the city of Tokyo.  Shinagawa Station will look like a zoo with 1000 chickens running around with their heads cut off.  Don’t be overwhelmed, you will find the Yamanote Line :).  From there, your destination is Shinjuku Station.   Key word when asking for help is Shinjuku Station.  They will direct you easily.  Just use your Pasmo card when entering, and exiting gated sections, then walk right through.  Once you arrive into Shinjuku, you have to take the Marunouchi Line (subway), and get off at Nakano-shimbashi Station (2 stops).  The key words when asking for help is Marunouchi Line to Nakano-shimbashi Station.  Once you get to the station, I’ll meet you there.  The walk to the house is 8 minutes.  If you feel like you’ve had enough of swapping on trains, then go take a cab (7 minutes) to the airbnb destination from Shinjuku Station to the airbnb (Yayoicho, Nakano, Tokyo 164-0013, Japan).  If you feel uncomfortable, I will personally meet you at the station, so don’t hesitate to ask.

***ONE WAY FROM HANEDA AIRPORT – Take a Uber Black for $80-$90USD one way, Taxi for 7000Yen (approx $70USD), or take a Express Bus for 1250Yen (approx $12.50USD).

Screen Shot 2018-03-15 at 12.53.01 PM.pngNarita Airport
When you exit with your luggage, get your pocket wifi (optional).  Now head toward the N’EX Narita Express – JR East.  This is the one shot express train that will take you straight to Shinjuku Station.  They have a counter and a machine system.  Use whatever floats your boat.  The key words when you’re asking for help is N’EX Narita Express to Shinjuku Station.  If you’re lucky there will be a express at the time you arrive that will take only 45min, otherwise it may have like 3 stops which is nothing.  Cost is around 3190 Yen ($30-40) I believe.  It will cost more if you get assigned seating, and vip areas (which is so much more comfy).

***we will get a Pasmo card later for you, unless you get that on your own in Narita Airport.  Just ask for the Pasmo Card machine, and just load money in it, and save it in your wallet.  No need for it until you arrive into Shinjuku.

***ONE WAY FROM NARITA AIRPORT – Take a Uber Black for $270USD one way, Taxi for 22895Yen (approx $228USD), or take a Limosine Bus for 3100Yen (approx $31USD).
