INTRO
Finally, we can travel back to Asia again!! :). I know that we’ve been waiting for this, and I thought it would be dope to go back to the mother land. March 9, 2023 – March 19, 2023 I’ll be celebrating in Osaka, and Tokyo Japan. (Osaka March 9 – 12 & Tokyo March 12 – 19). Everyone will have to leave on March 8th, to get to Osaka on the 9th in the evening. The actual Birthday is on March 28, but I wanted to adjust the dates so that certain people can come this time! From Super Nintendo World, to the clubs and all the food spots, I’ll make sure your that your IG posts will be lit, and make everyone at home be jelly jelly jelly. So excited and grateful y’all 🙂

WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE
With that being said, whether it’s your first time, or not, Japan is known for its highly structured society, governed by an unspoken set of strict etiquette rules. My people’s are known to be the most respectful, and courteous people in the world. Our culture is centered on respect of privacy, and respect of hierarchy in the family. It may be a culture shock to most, but for the Japanese, the quality of conduct in public is seen as highly reputable, and is held in high regard. We don’t expect foreigners, to know all the rules, but here are some tips.

  1. Smoking/Vaping – There’s designated areas where you can smoke outside. If you can’t find one, just smoke in an alley somewhere. DO NOT walk and smoke on the streets, DO NOT just walk outside the hotel, and smoke in public, DO NOT throw your butts on the street. It’s considered very bad manners.
  2. Trash – Speaking of cigarette butts/garbage, you might find yourself wandering through Tokyo, or any other big city, looking for a trash bin. For various reasons, they are sometimes scarce. One of them being, take your garbage home since it’s yours. Their garbage day system at home is very organized too. Literally every day is garbage day, and depending what city you are in, it kinda goes something like this. Day 1 – plastic only, day 2 – paper only, day 3 – raw garbage only, day 4 – cardboard box etc. Hence why the country is so clean everywhere you go.
  3. Tipping – NO tipping in Japan. The end.
  4. Escalators – People stand on the left in Kanto; the East side of Japan including Tokyo, as well as most other regions. On the other hand, people stand on the right side in Kansai; the West side of Japan, especially Osaka. You will see how organized it is when you get to a escalator, and the stairs in Japan.

Other than these, bow to say hi, and bye (shaking hands still good), slurp your soups, and noodles to show appreciation for the dish, take your shoes off inside, don’t pour your own drinks, don’t walk and eat, don’t be so damn loud unless we are at the club or at a izakaya (people on the train speak quietly to each other, and rarely speak on the phone too), respect your elders (even if they are a year older), don’t jaywalk, taxi doors open and close automatically so have patience, and don’t point at people with your chopsticks. Congrats, you are Japanese now.

COVID 19 / TRAVEL
Visitors are expected to be fully vaccinated with one booster shot or have a negative COVID PCR test result taken within 72 hours of departure. To expedite your arrival to Japan, be sure to have your physical vaccination certificate on hand. There is an online Fast Track system established by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). Download the MySOS app and upload the required documents; your screen will turn blue or green when all information has been submitted, and you’ll receive a QR code to show to authorities at customs and immigration.

In Japan, where consideration for others is a big part of their culture, masks are worn to protect oneself, but also as a courtesy, and sign of respect for those around you. The Japanese government continues to strongly recommend masking, and use is expected, especially indoors when parties are speaking, but masks are not technically required in hotels and restaurants. Masks are also not required outdoors, but encouraged if you aren’t able to maintain social distancing.

As of May 2020, travelers riding the shinkansenor bullet trains—need to reserve a special seat if they have “oversized” baggage: anything between 160 and 250 cm (63 and 98 inches, essentially any bag larger than a carry-on suitcase).

MONIES
1 USD = 147.07 JPY (January 16, 2024)
1 CAD = 109.13 JPY (January 16, 2024)
Pretty much what this means is that the USD is still stronger than the Japanese YEN, so things will be cheaper for us! Simply put, $100 USD will give us around $147.07 worth of Yen. Fortunately for my Canadians, the YEN is still low. ($100 CAD = $109.13 worth of YEN). A more detailed look at simple conversion is on my 2018 Tokyo Birthday blog.

We will grab personalized Pasmo or Suica cards. These are pre-paid cards for the trains, subways, vending machines, restaurants, and certain stores. You can get these easily at any train station. For anyone staying longer and doing cross country on trains and on the bullet train, look into getting a UNLIMITED JR Pass which is around $450 for 7 days. You can go anywhere on any train unlimited times. One way bullet train ride from Tokyo to Osaka is usually $110-$150, so if you’re hopping around its definitely worth it.

FOOD FOOD FOOD

Michelin Star to the hole in the wall restaurants, the food scene is unreal in Japan. Even McDonald’s and KFC tastes better there. From Japanese curry, shabu shabu, yakitori, teriyaki, sushi, ramen, udon, soba, tempura, fluffy pancakes, wagyu steak, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, pizza, gyoza, etc, just let me know what you’re in the mood for and I’ll guide you or take you there. Remember the food at convenience stores like Lawson/7eleven/Minimart is fire too lol. Anyways, here are some to get you inspired below. BTW if you’re a coffee connoisseur, here’s a great list for that. IG POST VIDEO
