TIPS & INFO

*Thai Baht is their currency.  $100 USD = 3502 Baht, and $100 CAD = 2619 Baht.  Let’s use a familiar example.  A Big Mac combo at McDonalds in Bangkok is 215 Baht = $6.14 USD.  A 1 hour foot massage is around 400 Baht = $11.42 USD.  The cheapest things are local street food, and transportation in Bangkok (BTS Sky Train – $0.50 USD, Grab from airport into the city $12 USD, Taxi’s around the same as a Grab).

*I have T-Mobile and it works fine in Bangkok, but data is very slow.

*Make sure you have a universal adaptor for your electronics.  For cell phones everything should be easy, but for anything else be prepared.

*Grab App.  It’s the equivalent to Uber, Uber Eats & Lyft.  Actually, I think Uber owns it.  Download it, and have it ready before you land to Bangkok.  It’s the first thing you will use to get to the Airbnb from the airport. You can order food on it as well.

*The weather will be hot as hell.  94/F=34/C everyday, and it stays warm at night too.  So stay hydrated.

*Time Zone – Bangkok is  15 hours ahead of Los Angeles.  So if it’s 12:00PM (PDT) in Los Angeles, it will be 3:00AM (GMT) in Bangkok.    Minus another 3 hours on top of that for our people in Toronto, and Atlanta.  12:00PM (EST) in Atlanta/Toronto, is 12:00AM (GMT) in Bangkok.  (12 Hours ahead).

FUN FACTS

  • Maha Vajiralongkorn is the King of Thailand
  • Population of Bangkok is 10.9 million, Phuket is 449,000, and the population of Thailand is 71.801 million people.
  • The standard Thai greeting is Sawasdee (sounds like “sah-wah-dee”).  Men say hello with say-wah-dee-khrap (short and sharp finish).  Women say hello with say-wah-dee-khaa (drawn out finish)
  • Temple etiquette in Thailand has rules.  Turn off phone, don’t point, don’t smoke, don’t chew gum, don’t photograph monks, don’t touch Buddha, remove shoes, remove hats, greet monks with a wai, and dress modestly (Shorts, sleeveless tops, flip flops, and sandals without back straps aren’t allowed.  The most common offense committed inside of temples is to pose for a photo, or a selfie with back turned to a Buddha image.  The temple is a holy, and spiritual place, so act like if you were going to church on a Sunday.  I don’t see anyone taking a selfie with Jesus on the cross in the background.
  • The Buddha is sacred in Thailand, so if you have any tattoos, or jewelry, or anything that has a Buddha on it…well hide it.
  • Women may never touch a monk, or his robes.
  • Phang Nga, was one of the spots that got heavily hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, and tsunami.  5078 people died, and 3716 people went missing in total.
  • Mangosteen is the National Fruit of Thailand.  Exotic tropical fruit that tastes amazing.
  • According to MasterCard, Bangkok is the most traveled to city in the world.
  • Cannabis is legal to people who have a medical license. You cannot smoke it outside in public.
  • Vapes are illegal too.
